On Saturday, October 11 I finished my second half marathon as my sister, Sherry finished her first one. We ran the Middle Half in our town. The weather forecast included downpours and a Facebook status even suggested the race may have to be postponed or even canceled. Luckily the rain held off and it was a pleasant day to run.
We have been training for several months for this day. We are not the same pace, so this made it interesting. But every Saturday for at least a month, we met early in the morning for our run. For the first 10 miler, she wanted to run slow and easy, so I was actually able to keep up. But for a few other runs, she went ahead and would circle back to check on me. It worked for us.
My purpose for doing this race was to support my baby sister. A few times I suggested transferring my bib, but she wouldn’t allow it. I trained better this year than last since I didn’t have the problem with plantar fasciitis this time around. I hoped to get a PR since I felt ready. I even daydreamed about how wonderful it would be. I could now run for at least an hour without stopping to walk. But it wasn’t as great as I hoped. I had a foot cramp around mile 11 that just wouldn’t quit. The last few miles were tough. But I don’t want to focus on me. I want to celebrate my sister with this post.
My sister, on the other hand, had a great race and finished in 2:48.She will probably wear her medal for days! And she should. She crushed her goals, stuck to her training and never gave up. I’m very proud of her. Way to go Sis!
